What are hypertensive crises?

What is a hypertensive crisis ?, How do we have to act if it occurs?

In another article we talk about drugs that are used to treat high blood pressure, today we talk about the crisis of hypertension, symptoms and consequences of this disorder.

What is blood pressure?

It is the pressure exerted by the blood as it passes through the arteries or blood vessels that go from the heart to the rest of the organism.

The pressure arterial can be: normal, low or high also called hypertension.

  • The normal blood pressure : is in a range of 90/60 and 12/80 mm Hg ( what we commonly call 9-6 or 12 -8 voltage)
  • The low blood pressure : when it is below 90/60 mm Hg
  • The high blood pressure : when it is above 130/9 0 mm Hg

Having high blood pressure is a risk because it can damage blood vessels and organs in general. In Spain 35% of the population suffers from hypertension, the figures rise from 65 years.

Hypertensive crises

Once we are clear that is hypertension, we reach hypertensive crises, which are a serious increase in blood pressure 180 or higher systolic or 110 or higher for diastolic. Within hypertensive crises we have two categories. The distinction between one and the other must be made by the doctor (so if your tension is the one we comment on, 180 above the systolic or 110 the diastolic you have to go to a health center or hospital/ or call 112 emergency phone number if you can not get around)

1- Hypertensive-urgent crises . . p>

In this case the tension is very high but the doctor does not suspect there is damage to the organs. The symptoms of an urgent hypertensive crisis can vary depending on the person the most frequent are:

  • Chest pain
  • Severe headache
  • Difficulty to breathe
  • Shortness of breath
  • Changes in vision
  • Nosebleeds
  • Back pain
  • Anxiety severe
pain in the chest

✩If you have high blood pressure and any of these symptoms you see the doctor or if you can not go alone, someone will take you or call you to the emergency room, do not expect it to "happen" to you, it may be too late. It is better to prevent.

The treatment of this crisis requires a readjustment in the medication that the patient already has, does not usually require hospitalization.

2- Hypertensive-emergency crisis

In this case the tension also reaches levels above 180 systolic and 120 the diastolic but the doctor suspects that the organs may be damaged . The consequences of this type of emergency hypertensive crisis can be serious, for example:

  • Stroke or stroke
  • Causing a heart attack
  • Affecting eyes or kidneys
  • Problems in pregnancy (Eclampsia)
  • Angina pectoris
  • Pulmonary edema

Tal As we said before, if you take the tension you get 180 or higher the systolic or 110 or higher for the diastolic go to the doctor.
